Clarity over complexity: Why simplicity always wins

Whatever the industry, it can be tempting to demonstrate your expertise or product by exploring its complexities, getting into every little detail, flooding the customer with specs or rationale. Trouble is, that often means ‘clever’ jargon, convoluted messaging and confused audiences.

In a market full of noise, the clearest message wins.

  • Real benefit over excruciating detail
Buyers want to know the benefits of what you’re selling. But rather than bombarding potential buyers with details of your production process, you need to focus on hitting the crux of what matters – empathising with their wants and needs. It may be that the emotional benefit outweighs the rational.
  • Smart doesn’t always equal clear
Wordplay, acronyms, or abstract positioning may impress internally with the people who know the product or service inside out but potentially alienate your actual customers.
  • Decision-making fatigue
Too many options or too much information makes the decision maker’s job harder. It can lead to them regretting their choice or leaving without anything.
  • Confidence is often more believable
When you’re confident with your messaging, your audience will respond. Be bold. Think ‘reassuringly expensive’ or ‘does what it says on the tin’ – you don’t need to convince your audience of every nuance, just sell the thing that matters to them.
  • Fall at the first hurdle
If your execution doesn’t cut through and your message isn’t immediately clear, customers won’t make it to the end of the ad or the bottom of the homepage – let alone request a demo or sign up to a newsletter.

The power of simplicity

At BPL, we believe in taking things back to basics. Starting with a Powerful Simplicity audit – an insight gathering process where we get under the skin of your brand’s challenges and opportunities.

We think about four key things: The people, the brand, the context and the idea. A ‘good idea’ being the one that can reach the right audience in the right way at the right time.

With over 70 years of creative and strategic know-how, we identify ways you can do things better, reducing friction and building confidence by making messaging clearer, more relevant and scalable.

We’ve recently been able to put this into practice for clients like Go Ahead with a ‘Better By Bus’ campaign, and Reiser where we encouraged food manufacturers to ‘Just add Reiser’ to their team.

In a world of information overload, clarity isn’t just king – it’s competitive advantage.
